Your corporate entity needs a taxpayer identification number from the ZRA

Start your tax procedures only after your company has registered with the ZRA and received its TPIN. This special number serves as the essential requirement for all tax procedures. Read the registration information and necessary documents on the official ZRA website.

Understand the Taxable Period

For tax purposes in Zambia, corporate income tax follows the calendar year from January 1 through December 31. Every tax evaluation and submission follows the calendar year schedule.

Submit provisional tax returns

During the financial year’s early stages, companies need to predict their yearly taxable income amount and then submit their initial tax forms. The income projection helps companies set their quarterly tax remittances. A company may update its income projections when it submits changes to its tax return during future quarters. The ZRA sets these submission periods for each quarter of the year.

  • First Quarter: March 31 (manual submissions by March 5).
  • Second Quarter: June 30.
  • Third Quarter: September 30.
  • Fourth Quarter: December 31.

The Zambia revenue authority gives a 10-day grace period until the 10th day of each month to make tax payments following each three months.

File the final tax return

Companies need to turn in their final tax return at year end to match up all tax payments made before and during the year. This submission is due by:

  • June 21 for electronic filings.
  • June 5 for manual filings.

Include all unpaid taxes with this last submission.

Utilize the tax online portal

The Zambia Revenue Authority promotes electronic filing through its TaxOnline service, which decreases time and work compared to paper-based tax delivery. Find all the necessary steps and portal entry information on the ZRA website.

Maintain accurate records

To prepare for tax audits, you must maintain complete business records over six years. Business records preparation helps us meet ZRA demands and report taxes properly.

Be aware of penalties

You will face financial consequences if you send your tax documentation after the deadline. Follow all tax deadline requirements and stay in touch with ZRA staff when problems occur.

Seek professional assistance if needed

Tax regulations can be complex. Tax experts know Zambian tax rules so their assistance helps businesses meet legal requirements while also using tax benefits effectively.

income tax reporting

Any business or person who generates income from Zambia or related sources is mandated to submit their tax statement to the authorities. These take two forms:

  • Provisional income tax returns.
  • Annual income tax returns.

Businesses must pay their tax return on these specific dates: Provisional income tax first installment due March 31, payable by April 10. The second installment is due June 30, payable by July 10. The third installment is due September 30, payable by October 10. The fourth and final installment is due December 31, payable by January 10.

Annual/final income tax: payable by June 21st of the subsequent tax charge year.

Transfer pricing

Under the Income Tax Transfer Pricing Amendment Regulations of 2018, the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) can adjust transfer prices when businesses operate on terms that differ from commercial standards. All Zambian taxpaying businesses need to keep proper records when conducting business under transfer pricing rules. Businesses need to maintain their records of proof this year for ten years.

Withholding tax on passive income

Under present rules, a tax of 20% applies when local companies distribute profits to foreign residents.
